Positioning on foundations of three transformers and switch panels in Scotland

HBH Logistics was commissioned to position three transformers with a piece weight of 80 tons and the corresponding switch panels with a piece weight of 15 tons onto their respective foundations. Our task included transporting the switch panels from Switzerland by barge and flatbed lorry.

The transformers could only be moved onto the foundations using a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT), as the construction site’s location would not allow any other option. The transformers were unloaded from the SPMT using lifting technology and slid onto the foundations.

The problem with the switch panels was that their weight was not evenly distributed – and this was only established after the cartons had been unpacked. As a consequence, it was not possible to reload them on the factory premises and to drive around to the front of the foundations.

An HBH employee devised an appropriate solution at the construction site: nylon straps of different lengths were made. The weight differences could then be compensated by adding chain separators, and the switch panels then loaded and positioned on the foundations.
